Cycling is the epitome of sustainable mobility. When we’re out and about on a bike, our perception of the city changes immediately. Cycling requires its own sensory and tactile stimuli for perception, unlike traveling by car.
With this in mind, the Hamburg-Harburg Bike Station has been designed as a new type of building. Conventional parking garages have traditionally been designed solely to provide efficient parking spaces and are geared toward the needs of drivers. The Bike Station in Harburg, on the other hand, is geared toward the needs of people who travel by bicycle.
The building's design is inspired by the movement and flow of cyclists. You can ride your bike all the way through the bike shelter. The pedestrian walkways are separate from the bike paths—ensuring the safety of all users.
Set against the backdrop of a hectic intersection, the bicycle shelter serves as a tranquil counterpoint to the confusing street layout. Cyclists are guided into the ground floor from all directions through the spacious openings. The large glass facade facing east toward the railroad tracks allows light and air into the building. The bicycle shelter stands as a green urban element between the Walter-Dudek Bridge and the Hannoversche Bridge.
