U5 Line (entire line), Hamburg

The new U5 line between Barmbek and Bramfeld will connect four different neighborhoods in the future. The “white line,” with its own corporate identity, will also serve as a catalyst for new urban development—with the individual stations playing a special role. Although passengers are traveling on a subway line, they can experience the journey through the neighborhoods firsthand. This is because the cultural, historical, and architectural characteristics of each neighborhood are reflected in the diversity of materials, detailing, and color schemes used in the subway stations. The deliberate use of these design elements creates distinctive visual cues. The digital infrastructure elements in the stations (platform screen doors, smoke curtains, community boards) serve as atmospheric and contemplative visualization zones that establish a sense of place and time in relation to the neighborhood and the city of Hamburg. The data generated by Smart City Hamburg is visualized in creative applications, fostering a lasting awareness of urban transformation. The platform screen doors, each in a different color, are defining spatial elements that connect the stations as if along a horizontal timeline.
