A childcare facility with seven classes poses a challenge for day-to-day operations due to its size and the number of children. Common areas and quiet spaces—as a fundamental concept—are not mutually exclusive, but rather requirements that the design of the New St. Remigius Daycare Center addresses. Each group is assigned its own building and is connected to the others through an indoor play area. The grounds of the existing and new kindergartens form an oasis amid the surrounding residential development. The new building emphasizes the qualities of the site. The gently flowing garden is home to nine buildings, connected by a large green grass roof: seven children’s houses, an administrative building, and a kitchen building. The interior space flows in harmony with the exterior and connects the individual buildings. The new kindergarten blends into the garden and becomes a “children’s garden” in the literal sense. The family center emerges from the ground up, rising from the administration and kitchen buildings due to the sloping terrain.
