The Theresen Elementary School in Germering, built in 1968, underwent an “energy-efficient renovation and a comprehensive renovation with funding under the Fiscal Equalization Act” using funds from the federal government’s economic stimulus package. In addition to the comprehensive structural renovation, the existing facilities were to be restructured in accordance with the school’s educational requirements. Learning landscapes were created in the hallways to complement the classrooms. The new foyer was equipped with tiered seating to compensate for the lack of an auditorium. The comprehensive renovation was carried out while the school remained in operation. The energy consumption of the renovated building meets Passive House standards.

AWARDS, HONORS, AND PUBLICATIONS
“Energy Conservation Takes Hold in Schools – 12 Model Projects” In cooperation with the Ministry of Education and Cultural Affairs and the Bavarian Chamber of Architects, the Bavarian State Government selected 12 exemplary model construction projects from among the 808 Bavarian schools whose renovations were subsidized by funds from the Economic Stimulus Package II. The “Renovation and Refurbishment of Theresen Elementary School” project serves as a model due to its high architectural quality and exemplary user participation through the Matrix process.
The Theresen Elementary School project was presented in 2012 at the “Matrix” exhibition at the Architekturgalerie Berlin.
