To accommodate full-day operations, the school building—which dates back to the 1960s—was to be expanded to include four classrooms, two after-school care groups, and a school kitchen with a multipurpose room. Our new addition responds to the existing structure, expands its potential uses, and reveals hidden spatial qualities. The addition is connected to the exterior wall of the stairwell. The former exterior wall serves as the interface between the old and the new, creating a seamless transition. The design was developed down to 1:1 scale. The choice of colors and materials builds on the existing building while giving it new emphasis. Bright yellow-green doors in both the new and existing sections connect the two parts of the building, and only the door jambs of the classroom doors are finished in bold shades of blue and red. By developing a modular system, the furnishing could be implemented cost-effectively. The back walls of the all-day classrooms serve as service walls, integrating all necessary functions—cloakroom, teaching materials, and book storage—for each student. Construction work was carried out while the school remained in operation. The active involvement of teachers and students in the planning process ensured long-term acceptance and a sense of ownership.
