Subway stations are transit hubs: public spaces frequented by large numbers of people every day.
For those arriving, inclusive wayfinding and anxiety-free navigation are essential. Everyone departing needs an atmosphere that makes their time there pleasant, which helps make the wait seem shorter.
The extension of the U6 subway line will connect the Martinsried research hub with the city of Munich and, in the future, link the two major research and university centers of Martinsried and Garching.
The distinctive design of the new subway station stems from the “Life Science Campus” theme at the Martinsried site: The ceiling, with its organic openings, is reminiscent of cellular structures viewed under a microscope. Various types of these cell-like forms are arranged across the ceiling surface, with each cell serving a specific function: they provide natural light, facilitate smoke extraction, reduce noise, or support artificial lighting. The cellular structure is also visible in the outdoor area, where the smoke extraction domes and skylights blend organically into the landscape.
